Lakers hire Mike D’Antoni as their new head coach.
Why not Phil?
Mainly because of the personnel. Running the Triangle is great for Kobe and Pau, but not the best fit for Steve Nash and Dwight Howard. That, along with the Lakers’ struggling to implement the similarly complex Princeton weighed on the decision.
A league source said D’Antoni has a three-year deal worth $12 million and that the fourth year is a club option.
D’Antoni recently had knee surgery, and hasn’t been cleared to travel yet. No timetable on when he’ll join the team. Bernie Bickerstaff may remain interim head coach even after D’Antoni is officially introduced as head coach.
Dwight Howard’s first points as a Laker.
